Group Charmin's Welcome Remarks: It gives me a great pleasure to extend to you all a very warm welcome to the Saudi Sleep Medicine Group (SSMG) website. This is a truly ambitious step since this is the first website of its kind for such group in the region. SSMG is a medical scientific body, formed in March 2008 as a chapter from the Saudi Thoracic Society (STS). SSMG is devoted to increase awareness, knowledge and practice of common sleep disorders among the public and health care workers, to facilitate advances in the treatment of affected people within the Kingdom and to promote research in the field of sleep medicine.
It is expected that this scientific group will pursue and accomplish many objectives within the next few years. These objectives are: to investigate the local incidence and prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in Saudi Arabia, to identify the local characteristics of this illness including its morbidity and mortality and to develop national guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of OSA. SSMG will also provide expertise that addresses issues related to the education and training of healthcare professionals in the field of sleep disorders, promote public awareness through different means including print, electronic media, and public seminars, and finally, establish a nationwide fund for conducting research and patients support.
I am quite confident that you will find this website is of an exceptional quality, and I may take this opportunity to thank all those behind this great effort.
Finally, I wish you all a beneficial and an enjoyable time with our website.
Yours Sincerely, Dr. Siraj O Wali, MB BS, FRCPC, FACP, FCCP Chairman, Saudi Sleep Medicine Group, SSMG
